Helper or Hinderer?

The position of Helper is not an easy position to walk in. In fact it can become very frustrating sometimes. Do you know what? When you are “helping” someone, many times it would be lot easier if you could just “do it yourself” instead of standing there watching them fumble with it. Right? If we do that though, we are no longer their “helper”, we have now become a “hinderer”.

Jesus said in John 16:7, “It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.”

The Amplified Bible describes the Holy Spirit, our Helper, this way: the Comforter, Counselor, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, and Standby.

If we are going to really “Help” someone, we need to be an influence around him or her in this same way. If we “do it” for them, we hinder them from growth; but if we learn to walk with the Holy Spirit as a comforter, counselor, advocate, intercessor, strengthener, and standby, we will help them develop their full potential and fulfill God’s purposes in their lives and that’s the greatest joy of all.
